Dr. Gene Wang is an Assistant Professor of Art History at the University of Washington, where his practice integrates art historical inquiry, critical theory, and curatorial praxis. As an interdisciplinary scholar, Professor Wang’s research examines the conceptual and material modalities of inscription within transpacific artistic currents, foregrounding the corporeal acts of mark-making as mediated through aesthetic exchanges between East Asia and the United States since the 1980s.

Deeply attuned to the epistemic ruptures and possibilities engendered by historically marginalized art histories, as well as his experiential navigation of transcultural thresholds, Professor Wang’s pedagogical philosophy is one of radical inclusivity and dialogical engagement. At the Tacoma campus, his courses coalesce around a “global Asias” framework, spanning from ancient Asian visualities to contemporary Asian American artistic articulations. Building on his experience of cultivating collaborations with cultural institutions, he envisions fostering collection-based research and learning in Tacoma, the ancestral homelands of the Coast Salish peoples.
